Classroom Lessons (February, 2020)

Students will participate in classroom lessons that lead into a water conservation project.

We will start with the ‘Modern Revolution’ by Crash Course History (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4Zdmd4J7TI) and various lessons discussing renewable and non-renewable resources.

After watching “The World Without Canada” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrI_uhYFvCY) we will discuss Canada’s resources, specifically focusing on water.

We will then watch “Which Countries are Fighting Over Water” by Now This World (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAR_vN4MgVY) and start a dialogue about Canada’s responsibility.

After a class discussion about our roles and responsibilities with water, students will be expected to complete a full-day water audit at home. They will be expected to do some investigate of household toilets, shower heads, running taps, and water meters.

Using our school computers, students will input their water usage into the Green Bricks Water Audit (https://greenbricks.ca/audits/water-audit/) to generate a numerical total. We will then discuss possible reduction measures.

Student Initiatives (March, 2020)

Each student will be expected to reflect on their water stewardship and water footprint. Individually or with a partner, students will be expected to improve water efficiency at home to improve overall water conservation OR create an awareness campaign that educates others how to help protect urban waterways or improve water conservation.

Students will share their experiences or campaigns with the class using digital media.

 

Green Bricks Water Workshop (April, 2020)

The Green Bricks Education Society has been invited into our classroom. In April, our class will be participating in a “highly interactive and curriculum-connected workshop… to address the issues around our access and relationship with water (both locally and globally) and further explores new and emerging careers in the green economy.  Via interactive activities the students learn about our built environment; and how new innovations and technology combined with concepts from our past, through First Peoples knowledge are helping to change and shape our future environment” (The Green Bricks Education Society).
  

Green Bricks Aqualibrium (May, 2020)

In addition to Green Bricks interactive workshop about our access and relationship to water, The Green Bricks Education Society has also been invited into our classroom to introduce students to new concepts about urban water management. In May, our class will be participating in a 2-day hands-on workshop called Aqualibrium.

“Aqualibrium (http://www.aqualibriumcompetition.net/joomla/)... is designed to challenge participants about the urban water cycle, how water gets to their homes and the role of civil engineers in it, the application of physics and mathematical concepts and the importance of preserving water resources. The goal of this project is to distribute water equally between three points on a grid using a network of pipes. Teams are judged on how well they can achieve this task” (The Green Bricks Education Society).

 

Students will be expected to consider the following:

“What would YOU do if you were a civil engineer responsible to share water amongst your citizens in a time when water is scarce? Would you give more to an area that has a golf course or makes money from tourism? Would you give more to an area where they pay higher taxes?” (The Green Bricks Education Society).
